What is biotin and why should you care?

Unless you’ve been away in the mountains for the past few years, you must have heard people enthusiastically speak about biotin (also known as Vitamin H or B7). But what is biotin? What are its benefits? How can you ensure that you’re getting enough of it? Fret not, we’re here to answer all your questions.

What is biotin?

Biotin is essentially a vitamin — and well, an essential one at that. It’s one of the members of the B complex family of vitamins that help the body convert food into energy and are crucial to our overall well-being. Only small amounts of biotin are needed as a daily requirement. When there is a deficiency, it usually leads to hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails, and some other issues.

Why do I need it?

While more research is definitely needed, signs indicate that biotin contributes to the health of hair, skin and nails. It is often suggested as a supplement to improve hair health. A study done by the Ablon Skin Institute Research Center and the University of California found that when women with temporary hair thinning added biotin to their diet, it created significant hair growth. Also, biotin deficiency has been linked to alopecia, which is a condition where the immune system attacks itself, resulting in temporary or permanent hair loss.

While we know people rely on supplements like plant collagen for skin health, biotin also has a key role to play. Currently there isn’t enough research on the above but the benefits can be inferred as biotin-deficiency results in a number of skin issues. If you're worried about dry skin, biotin may help fortify it as it produces fatty acids that nourish the skin, and help oil glands function properly.

Biotin can help when your nails feel fragile/brittle as well. According to a recent study, biotin supplements were effective in 91% of the participants to grow healthy, strong nails. Few studies have shown that women with brittle nails experienced less fingernail-splitting and an increase in thickness of their nails once they supplemented their diet with biotin.

Lauren Graf, clinical dietitian for Montefiore-Einstein Cardiac Wellness Program notes, “Biotin is important for hair, skin and nails. Low levels of biotin can lead to a lot of unwanted conditions. Taking a biotin supplement is not likely to be harmful and may improve hair quality."

While biotin is primarily thought to contribute towards strong, healthy hair, nails and skin, it actually plays a much broader role in our overall well-being. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, biotin metabolises carbohydrates, fats and amino acids.

Where do I get my biotin?

Biotin can be found in a wide variety of foods. In our regular diets, biotin typically comes from things like eggs, soy, nuts, walnuts, whole grains, beans and legumes, cauliflower and bananas. Although, it’s quite difficult for most people to eat foods rich in biotin on a consistent basis. This is what makes supplementation a good idea.

While biotin capsules, biotin tablets and biotin rich foods are all viable options — they definitely lack when it comes to the experience. And that’s exactly why you should be considering gummies.
