We love our planet and nullifying our carbon and environmental footprint is at the core of everything we do at Welly. A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact your activities have on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced through the burning of fossil fuels and is expressed as a weight of CO2 emissions produced in tonnes.
What does it mean to be Carbon Neutral?
It’s a simple idea: it’s inevitable sometimes to leave a carbon footprint when we create packaging or transport our items. Essentially, the sum of all the greenhouse gases that you put into and take out of the atmosphere should balance out to zero. So carbon neutrality refers to achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions, and this can be done by balancing emissions of carbon dioxide with its removal or by eliminating emissions from society.
Well, how are we carbon neutral?
We calculated the carbon dioxide emissions of all our packaging materials -- wrappers, tins, boxes, everything.
Even though we already use eco-friendly products and employ sustainable manufacturing practices, it will still take some time to neutralise our carbon footprint completely due to some unavoidable carbon emissions. And so we thought, what about off-setting our footprint in other ways?
Through donations to renewable and solar energy projects in India. These projects prevent future carbon emissions and remove existing CO2 from the environment.
And so, we are able to offset the carbon dioxide emissions (footprint) so made. We are now proudly contributing to United Nations’ SDG numbers 3 (Good Health and Well Being), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 13 (Climate Action).
How do we select our offset projects?
We worked with SimpliZero to calculate the CO2 emissions from each stage of our packaging’s supply chain. This enabled us to measure the carbon footprint for each of our packaging types and find the best-suited carbon offset projects.
Our approach for carbon neutrality is to offset our carbon footprint along our supply chain and have a mix of Renewable Energy and Community projects. We worked with Green Story to handpick projects based on their type, location, and benefits. Each project supports multiple UN sustainable development goals in addition to offsetting CO2. All our projects are rigorously verified and certified through The Gold Standard and The Verified Carbon Standard. These independent verifiers make sure that the projects are working to deliver the benefits they promise.
